Turning Rotterdam into a Playground — Interactive City Puzzle Game Design

🧩 The Story: Turning Rotterdam into a Playground of Stories

MonstroCity is an interactive city tour game designed to bring people together through puzzles, play, and the streets of Rotterdam. Blending gamification, local storytelling, and community engagement, it invites players to rediscover the city from a fresh, playful perspective.

I developed the concept, narrative, and visual design, crafting a whimsical experience built around a semi-fictional storyline. Guided by quirky characters and unfolding mysteries, players explore Rotterdam in a way that’s both imaginative and deeply connected to its local culture—turning everyday streets into a stage for discovery.

⚡ The Challenge: How Do You Gamify a City Without Losing Its Soul?

The goal was to design a playful yet meaningful urban experience that would:

  • Foster real-world connections between players and their surroundings

  • Celebrate Rotterdam’s local identity through story-driven exploration

  • Encourage collaboration, curiosity, and creativity across diverse groups

  • Remain inclusive, scalable, and easy to experience on foot

At its core, the challenge was to turn the city itself into a game without losing the authenticity, culture, and spirit that make Rotterdam unique.

🎯 My Role: Weaving Narrative Into Navigation

As a game designer and storyteller, I brought MonstroCity to life—wearing multiple creative hats across concept, design, and community engagement.

  • Developed an interactive, socially engaging game concept and demo that connects players not only with each other but also with Rotterdam’s local culture and stories.
  • Created a scalable framework that can be adapted and expanded to other cities and urban environments, fostering community connection through play.
