From 你好 / Ni Hao ➝ Hoi: Breaking the “Language Barrier” in the Netherlands!

For the past three weeks, something shifted.

When I’ve walked into a shop or office and greeted people with a “Goedemorgen” or “Goedemiddag,” I got their response in Dutch, not English!

For an expat, this is a big step forward. It means my pronunciation finally sounds “Dutch” enough that people don’t immediately switch to English to “save” me

For years, I was so stuck. I was only used to the clear, polished, and slower pace of NOS news presenters. However in real life conversation is andere koek (a different cookie altogether). To bridge the gap between “classroom Dutch” and the real world, I focused on two things:

  1. Tackling the Accent: I started reading articles out loud to Dutch friends and teachers to strip away the Mandarin and English influences in my speech.
  2. Active Listening: I pushed myself to get used to different regional accents and the natural speed of native speakers.

I’m thrilled to finally have proper, daily conversations in Dutch. The journey isn’t over yet. Anyhow,  I’m one step closer to sounding like a local!

Note:
Here are a few Dutch sounds that are particularly challenging for native Mandarin speakers

  • The infamous “g”: A throat-clearing exercise disguised as a letter.
  • Vowel combos like ui, eu, and oe: Sounds that don’t exist in Mandarin!
  • “Mutant” combinations like “gr-” or “-rui”: Straight out of a sci-fi script.
  • Tonic Stress: Shift the emphasis to one syllable, and suddenly you’re saying a completely different word.

I’m curious which Dutch sounds are the “final boss” for you? Please feel free to let me know!
